How Do I Write the SAT Essay?

I see this question pop up numerous times, both with my tutoring students, and on college forums: “How do I write a good SAT essay?”

Formulaic vs Creative Writing

The first thing you have remember with the SAT essay is that it is very formulaic. This is not creative writing. It is not poetry. The College Board wants to know that you can write a solid, coherent, grammatically correct argumentative essay, presenting facts and evidence from both your personal life and from culture in a logical way that builds your argument.

How to Write An Essay According to Gary Provost

writing how to write an essay Gary Provost quote

“This sentence has five words. Here are five more words. Five-word sentences are fine. But several together become monotonous. Listen to what is happening. The writing is getting boring. The sound of it drones. It’s like a stuck record. The ear demands some variety.

Now listen.
I vary the sentence length, and I create music. Music. The writing sings.
It has a pleasant rhythm, a lilt, a harmony.
I use short sentences.
And I use sentences of medium length.
And sometimes, when I am certain the reader is rested, I will engage him with a sentence of considerable length, a sentence that burns with energy and builds with all the impetus of a crescendo, the roll of the drums, the clash of the cymbals-sounds that say listen to this, it is important.”

Algebraic Properties of Real Numbers: An Overview

There are ten basic algebraic properties of real numbers. However, before we go into them, I’d like to discuss the underlying mathematical law behind these properties, which makes these properties possible.

The Golden Rule of Algebra

This rule is the Golden Rule of Algebra, and it will make your life that much easier if you follow it, as well as help you better understand the 10 algebraic properties of real numbers. It states that any mathematical operation can be performed on one side of the equation, as long as the exact same operation is performed on the other side of the equation.

SAT Preparation: How to Study for SAT – SAT Concepts and Techniques

When it comes to SAT preparation, there are two main factors that go into how you score on the SAT: how well you know the concepts covered on the SAT and how you know SAT-specific techniques that will help you save time, reduce the risk of mistakes, and understand what the (trickier) questions are really asking you.

This means that when you study for SAT tests, you need to practice not only the concepts and types of problems you will get, but also practice solving SAT-style problems in the time frames given.

How to Write An Essay – English Grammar Rules – Parts of Speech:Pt 2

Last week, I wrote an article entitled How to Write An Essay – English Grammar Rules – Parts of Speech: Part One, as part of my “How to Write An Essay” series, where I covered the first four of the parts of speech.

Understanding parts of speech and how to use is very important in how to write an essay, as they provide the building blocks of your sentences. Furthermore, developing a deep understanding of how english grammar rules affect the use of parts of speech is akin to developing a strong understanding of math rules and the different parts and functions of a mathematical equation: both sets of rules allow you to move toward your goal (a completed essay or a completed math solution) in logical and coherent manner, with a greatly minimized risk of confusion or failure.

The Importance of Parts of Speech

“Parts of speech” are an integral part of english grammar and are one of the most important things I focus on when I teach students how to write an essay. It is important to note that parts of speech denote what a word does, rather than what a word is. This is a very important distinction to keep in mind, as grammar rules allow some words to hold several functions, which can make english grammar confusing for some.

For example: “I read a book on my flight” and “I went to book my flight” both contain the word “book,” albeit in two completely different functions (noun and verb, respectively).
